Compared to the regular PC experience, of course, where a lot of the enjoyment depends on what kind of monitor you’re using (and the rig in general, but I’m referring to the visual dimensions of what you can see). And I for one don’t have one of those 31-inchers, and still play on console a lot, so I suppose the switch to the deck wasn’t that jarring for me. Maybe my poorass is just making excuses at this point though…

On to my point – and I see it brought up here and then, but I think it’s an interesting topic regardless. Especially since the deck was just “console Steam” in how I approached it. While I didn’t care to admit it at first, some games and more holistically speaking *whole genres* just feel much more tightly packed and, how d’you say it, they just hit different when you’re all comfy up in a nook with some pillows. Even better now that summer’s come, and I can darken my room, turn on the AC and just enjoy the bliss while the sun’s scorching everything outside.

For me, these 3 genres are the GOAT when it comes to how easy and smooth they feel to simply ease yourself into them and enjoy the ride

  1. Dungeon crawling ARPGs - The first game I chose to play on the deck was vintage AF, Dungeon Siege 2, and for some godforsaken reason… this thing runs better on it than on any newer PC I owned. Although much the same is true for most major new ARPGs, with Last Epoch perhaps being the smoothest now that a lot of the jank’s been smoothed out. It’s the casual glass of pure ARPG fun to Path of Exile 2’s dark & difficult approach, and I cycle between these two mainly now.
  2. Metroidvanias - They’re the methodical, story driven, one-off equivalent to roguelites in my life, and my god, are they great to play on the deck, which is turning out to be a substitute for Switch too (lol). Replayed both Blasphemous 1 and 2 on it, and slowly digging through Hollow Knight has been my way to spend the evening these days. And as any MV enjoyer, looking forward to Silksong and some other indie® games that I pick up on my wishlisting sprees, like Endless Night to name but one
  3. So-called “boomer shooters” - What’s there to say, really. They’re great, they’re better than AAA shooters, cheaper to boot, and the old schooly graphics just work so well on the small screen. CULTIC, Forgive me Father, Sulfur, etc. – just some ones I found flow incredibly well with deck controls
