  • As someone who has to interface professionally with solidworks and everyone at my company on the mechanical side uses solidworks, it is also slow as fuck when the part or assembly gets a bit complicated. Just opening it takes a few minutes. If we have to open solidworks and an assembly from scratch during a meeting, that is 10 minutes gone.

Definitely has 10x as many QoL and productvity features and much better TNP solutions and heuristics built over decades, plus very useful plugins, but speed and stability are not its strong points 😂

  • Withings, sadly has absolutely horrific heart rate tracking. This guy does correlation tests with the Polar H10 (skip to the graphs).

And I say this whenever this comes up in this sub.

Nothing is European in name only. They only have UK marketing. They have american investors, a shady CEO with a history of lying about his companies (oneplus “starup” BBK controversy anyone?) and everything is designed, coded, manufactured, tested, etc… in China.

They have started to maybe hire some people to possibly take over a bit of the phone design in the future in London, but the smartwatch is 100% a Chinese product. It even looks exactly like the standard ODM smart watches from the dozen Chinese companies that make all of the generic smart watches that get rebranded.

  • I have a few of those from 2nd hand stores, but they are getting harder to find. It definitely wouldn’t triple the cost new though, maybe 50% more or something, but I only have 10 or so now.

There are a ton of 2nd hand jars with just glass+glads with no fastening mechanic and sloped lips so 3rd party clamps or clips don’t work on them, so they can’t be held shut. Only good for storing dry grains and stuff.

  • Beyerdynamic. German company.

They are comfy pillows on your head. Significantly more comfortable than any gaming headset I have ever seen.

They have gamic headsets that wipe the floor with steelseries or similar. Or you can get one of their audio focused headsets.

Then just get a standing mic (way way way way better audio than headset boom mics)

Or do what I did before getting a standing mic and just get a replacement microphone for a standard gaming headset and a male to male or male to female aux cable with zip ties.

Behringer, t.bone, JTS, turtle beach (what I used, american company though), etc…

Or a modmic alternative like the audiotechnica ATGM2 or a lavalier mic (sennheiser has one), etc…

Bonus is you get a ridiculous higher audio quality for gaming, movies, and music.

  • I am forced to use WhatsApp for work and a few groups. Until last half of 2023 they literally had nothing.

They had no polls, no channels, communities, not even reactions… more barebones than signal to be honest. I was surprised when I switched mostly to signal. Now they have passed signal in terms of “features” again, but indeed no stories like signal.

I don’t know a single person who follows something on whatsapp. That is just not what it does well at all.

  • As an electronics designer professionally I just want to chime in.

With current infrastructure, it is very very very difficult to not go bankrupt and making consumer products in the EU the price for these sort of small products would be double to triple and of the same quality (I.e. shit products would also be shit, just much more expensive).

We need to be investing in automation infrastructure in low cost of living areas to get anywhere near competitive. Even current PCB manufacturers in Italy, Portugal, and Hungary are useful for B2B industrial, medical, and aerospace products mostly because the cost to assemble the PCBs is simply too high for consumers to consider buying.

Look at fairphone. They are designed in NL, software written in the EU, and still produced in China (searching for better conditions though) and like 90% of consumers that consider them won’t buy them specifically because of price point.

Designed in the EU, produced in china (and software in the EU) is already a large step up because development costs and profits go to EU companies, even if produced in China. Small companies have no other choice.

  • Nestle is swiss. It is still one of the worst companies in the world. Don’t support terrible companies.

    Spotify is a shit company.

    • They pay artists peanuts (0.3¢ compared to apple’s 1¢ and qobuz’s 1.3¢) but not only that, they put arbitrary thresholds that artists don’t get paid at all under, and when the artist goes over that threshold, they don’t get back pay, they only get paid for additional streams on top of it, and it is a monthly threshold so it resets constantly.

    • They push AI slop unlabeled onto consumers so that they get to keep 100% of profits instead of having to pay out artists and record labels

    • Spotify gives money to right wing efforts and their CEO is reportedly a right wing nationalist. They also gave money to the trump election

    • Spotify invests in war companies, particularly partners with one that is trying to use mass location data to spy on people and use in targeted drone attacks and such. Hmmm, I wonder if one of the biggest apps in the world that tracks and harvests all user data will use that data to help their extremely large investment and partner’s war machine?

    • on android, Spotify just works bad. Muting albums after a few songs with the only way to unmute being skipping backwards and then scrubbing in the song. It happens over and over. This only happens on albums, not Spotify-created playlists with the same songs.

    And more 🙃
